AVERY ARDOVINO finished fifth to lead the U.S. women’s jumping team in the opening event of the Continental Cup season on Sunday in Bischofsgrün, Germany. Two more Americans finished in the top 20.
The renovated hill in Bischofsgrün, which was officially inaugurated before the event, drew a crowd of 3,500 that saw Salome Fuchs of Switzerland post a hill record with a jump of 69 meters her second time down. But that wasn’t enough to displace a pair of German jumpers in the top two spots. Jenna Mohr won the meet, jumping 67.0 and 68.5 meters and scoring 235.1 points to beat teammate Anna Haefele by one point. Canada’s Katie Willis finished third, just 0.1 points back of Haefele.
Ardovino jumped 63.5 and 68.0 meters and finished with 229.8 points. Lindsey Van (59.5, 65.0) finished 17th and Brenna Ellis (60.5, 64.0) was 19th.
American Jessica Jerome, ranked third in the world two seasons ago before tearing two knee ligaments in a training crash last December, jumped 59.0 and didn’t qualify for a second jump. Abby Hughes (58.5) and Alissa Johnson (58.0) also failed to qualify
The next women’s competition is scheduled for Pöhla, Saxony, on Wednesday.
