MARCO SULLIVAN, one of the top downhill racers for the U.S. men’s team, suffered a heel fracture during training camp in Chile this last month, but he vows to be back for the first World Cup downhill race of the season in late November.
Sidelined for nearly two years with torn right knee ligaments and multiple operations after a Dec. 4, 2003, downhill training crash, Sullivan has come back strong. Last season, he missed the podium by just one-hundredth of a second in the World Cup downhill at Val Gardena. He also had four top-15s and won his second U.S. title, capturing the downhill at the U.S. Alpine Championships at Alyeska.
According to Sullivan, he was injured after going off a jump in a downhill course in Portillo, Chile. He will be out for 4 to 6 weeks, but back in action come the Lake Louise, Canada, World Cup downhill opener Nov. 24-25.
