Global Racing claimed the top to steps of the podium at today’s GS Europa Cup in Zinal, Switzerland with Brian McLaughlin in first and Maarten Meiners in second. This was McLaughlin’s first EC victory, winning the second run by .30 seconds to move from 25th to the top of the podium. Previously, the best result McLaughlin had achieved in an EC was a 16th in Oberjoch. His Global Racing teammate, Maarten Meiners, was right behind him in 2nd place, .14 seconds out. This was also Meiner’s best EC result, though he has had several top 10s.
Global Racing coach, Paul Epstein, told SkiNews that “Both he [Mclaughlin] and Maarten Meiners were accommodated by the fact that the second run laid out by the Norwegian coach was much more turning than the first run. McLaughlin and Meiners are more used to this from my training sessions.” Another Global Racing athlete, Dries Van den Broecke, broke into the top 30, but came in 10th on the second run.
Lukas Feuerstein, who had already finished second in Monday’s super-G, came in third to round out the international podium. He outperformed his goals, saying, “I started the race with the goal of the top 20, so that it will work out that way, I’m of course very happy. The conditions were difficult towards the end and the view of the ground was brutally poor, but I still had a great run.”
