Down Time Episode 7: We had a tiger on our hands/Chocolate cake and Doritos

"Ski racers are pretty lucky. We're not like gymnasts, where we can only eat a celery stick," says Resi Stiegler with a laugh.  A self-described former junk food addict who could get away with eating whatever she wanted, Stiegler says she now strays toward the healthier side of eating and it's helped her ski racing. So has a realization that grueling training sessions on the hill that Stiegler thought were boring have become more exciting. "It's like, 'Wow, I just got what my coach told me, I just put it into my skiing.' And that's the coolest feeling in the world," she says.
Julia Mancuso showed a fierce focus on the race hill even as an 8-year-old, her dad remembers. Ciro Mancuso says at that age he realized he had a tiger on his hands. "She was so focused, it blew me away and I went, 'Wow,'" Ciro said. Julia's mom remembers Julia beating girls four years older than her in a super G at Mammoth — and, oh yeah, she beat all the boys that day too.
