JEREMY TRANSUE of the U.S. is out for the season with an ACL tear that he sustained in France while racing in the Europa Cup downhill on Jan. 29.
The speed specialist from New York has had a string of bad luck. He bounced back last season after two years of right ACL reconstruction and rehab to gain a promotion to the B team for winter '08. He injured the knee midway through the 2005 season and lost all of '06 to rehab. However, last spring he made headway by claiming the bronze medal in downhill at the U.S. championships.
He was injured while running the Chamonix course in flat light.
"It was a day with not much light," he wrote SR in an e-mail. "It was pretty flat and fog was rolling in and out. I basically went off the top jump a little bit back, and then was in the air and couldnt see the ground or the landing. I opened up putting the landing gear down a little too early, So when i did hit the ground i just wasn't ready for it, and hit and just collapsed back and spun out a few times."
Transue, aka "Worm" to his teammates, recently had a doctors appointment and the prognosis is a torn ACL and meniscus in his right knee. He is set to have surgery on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14.
