Down Time Episode 14: Kaylin's calling/The weight of expectations

Feb 18, 2008

Off the race hill, Kaylin Richardson is passionate about giving back because she feels as though she's been given so much in her own life. To that end, the U.S. Ski Teamer has partnered with World Vision and she has basically adopted a small village in Africa that is dependent on charitable giving to help survive. "Mine is small village in Zambia, and one of their big things is wells for water," said Kaylin, who also sponsors a child from the village. Fans of Kaylin also can log on to her Web site and donate money to her village or other causes through World Vision.
To simply be an athlete again. That goal for TJ Lanning may sound simple, but consider what his body has endured over the past few seasons and it gets a bit more complicated and grueling. Lanning, one of the best junior athletes in the world for his age group back in 2001, carries lofty expectations of himself and from his coaches. But each positive step he took the past few seasons was met with a major injury. "We were a bit overzealous with TJ's program last year," said U.S. men's head coach Phil McNichol, describing how Lanning has always had the physical talent to perform, but injuries and inconsistent results have held him back. "The mental aspect is still not there. I'm not winning World Cups so I'm not at the point I want to be eventually," Lanning said.
