J2 Nationals: inspection key for SG winners

Mar 09, 2008

There was a difference of approach to the J2 National super G by the men's and women's winners. Many coaches say super G is the race won in inspection, and with a vertical drop of 550m over some varied terrain on Aspen's legendary Ruthies Run, inspection was certainly critical for the J2's.
Men's winner Hunter Schleper inspected alone. Gabrielle (just call me Gabby) Anthony had her own coach, and a reknown one at that, in Herman Goellner.
For Schleper, the brother of World Cup skier Sarah and hailing from nearby Vail, coaches distract him from the task of inspection. "I prefer to do it on my own," he said. "Coaches tend to ramble on."
Schlper said he had skied it previously, which might have been an advantage, but other than the downhill and training he had not raced the hill and just visualized how the course would run.

ASPEN, Colo., -There was a difference of approach to the J2 National super G by the men's and women's winners.     For Schleper, the brother of World Cup skier Sarah and hailing from nearby Vail, coaches distract him from the task of inspection. "I prefer to do it on my own," he said. "Coaches tend to ramble on."
Schleper said he had skied the hill previously, which might have been an advantage, but other than the downhill and training he had not raced the hill and just visualized how the course would run.
He obviously was pretty close to dead-on as he put in a smoking run and a .84 margin over the field.
There was just one spot that caught him by surprise. "The jump was a little more than I expected," he said, "but the tactics were perfect."
Liam Mulhern just got second place as two skiers, Michael Ankeny and Canadian Dominique Garand tied for third two hundredths of a second behind him.
For Anthony being the lone female entry from Sugarbowl, California,  meant she had Goellner pretty much to herself.
"I inspected with Hermann this morning and coming over Strawpile he stopped and said, 'This is money'. I hiked it twice to get a good look at that. I trust Herman with everything I have. He's helped me a lot."
Although her USSA point profile suggests she may be better in GS than SG, she says, "I love speed. But I was just going to put it down as well as I could and it was good enough for first, so that's great."
Anthony edged DH champ Felicia Byers for the win while Morgan Black collected third nearly a second behind the top duo.
