2008 USSA Western Region J3 Junior Olympic/J4 Festival
Hosted by:
BOGUS BASIN SKI RACING ALLIANCE
Bogus Basin, ID.
March 21-24, 2008
On March 21, Bogus Basin will welcome 170 elite thirteen and fourteen year old and 30 elite eleven and twelve year old alpine ski competitors for the 2008 J3 Junior Olympics and J4 Festival respectively. Athletes travel into the area from the western states of Alaska, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming; to represent the five divisions that make up Western Region USSA.
The Junior Olympics were first held in 1982. The Western Region J3 Junior Olympics consisted of a downhill, slalom, and giant slalom until 1986 when the downhill was replaced with a Super G. A combined title is also awarded for the best overall skier. The J4 Festival is held in conjunction with the J3 Junior Olympics and this year marks the ninth year of this addition to the Junior Olympic event. The event consists of a USSA Children’s Super G, giant slalom, and slalom. A combined title is also awarded to the best overall J4 athlete. The J3 Junior Olympics and J4 Festival rotate between the Western Region divisions on an annual basis.
Junior Olympics and the J4 Festival are the championship events for the J3s and top J4 athletes from the five divisions of the Western Region; Alaska, Far West, Intermountain, Northern, and PNSA divisions. Athletes qualify to attend the Junior Olympics and J4 Festival by competing in USSA sanctioned Junior Olympic and Youth Ski League competitions held in their respective division. There is no foreign quota for this event. Foreign J3 and J4 competitors living in the United States may attend as part of the quota of the division in which they are competing if they have proper membership with USSA and the division and qualify under division’s rules.
The Quota Distribution
Each year the quota distribution between divisions is recalculated and fluctuates based on population and performance during previous years championship events. The divisions are responsible for establishing the distribution method for their quotas.
The quota distribution for the 2008 J3 Junior Olympics is:
J3 Quota Distribution Alaska Far West Intermountain Northern PNSA Total
Men 6 28 27 10 24 95
Women 6 18 20 6 25 75
The J4 Festival quota for each division is 3 men and 3 women per division to make up a field of 15 men and 15 women or 30 athletes total.
Past competitors of this event include Idaho’s own Picabo Street, Dane Spencer, Erik Fischer and Hailey Duke, all present or former members of the U.S. Ski Team.

Athletes have the opportunity to qualify for the following:
Whistler Cup – April 2008
The Whistler Cup is a FIS event for children held in Whistler, B.C. Canada. The J4 athletes compete in one Kombi race, one giant slalom, and slalom. J3 athletes compete in one Super-G, giant slalom, and slalom for J3s. The US winners from the giant slalom and slalom from the J4 Festival qualify to be part of the USA Whistler Cup J4 team. If the same person wins both events, then the US silver medalist with the lowest race points is chosen. The US winners from the Super-G, giant slalom, and slalom from the J3 Junior Olympics will qualify to be part of the USA Whistler Cup J3 team.
NDS Junior Champions Camp – (TBD) 2008
The Junior Champions Camp brings together our nations top J3 athletes for a week long training opportunity with a clear focus on tactical development and pace. Athletes will work through a progression that seeks self guided tactical discovery as it relates to their personal skiing strengths. Utilizing timing and directive drills for feedback the curriculum and programming will mirror the USSA/USST Level 200 tactical development philosophies.
The top 3 J3 boys and the top 3 J3 girls who raced as J3s and remain J3s for the coming season plus the 2nd year J4 boys and girls will be ranked using the “old” 25-1 world cup scoring system. All events (SG, GS, and SL) will be scored. An individual’s score will be determined by totaling the points earned in all events and ranking them from highest points to lowest points. The top three J3 boys and girls + the top 2nd year J4 boy and girl will be invited to participate in the upcoming summer/fall 2008 NDS Junior Champions Camp. A development quota of 20% will be reserved for the Regional Director to use at his discretion.
Western Region Project Camps for 2008 -09 season –
Athletes are also included on invite lists for Western Region projects for the 2008-09 season based on their performance during the J3 Junior Olympics and J4 Festival. Example of camps includes the New J2 Flight School and the Topolino shootout camp.
