World Cup overall champion Lindsey Vonn became the first U.S. woman to top the World Cup prize money list, while fellow American overall champ Bode Miller led the men’s alpine list in prize money for the 2007-08 season.
WORLD CUP OVERALL champion Lindsey Vonn became the first U.S. woman to top the World Cup prize money list, while fellow American overall champ Bode Miller led the men’s alpine list in prize money for the 2007-08 season.
Miller netted a total of 402,983 Swiss Francs for six wins and another five podium appearances. Vonn, who captured six wins, earned CHF 340,000.
For Miller, it’s the third time he’s topped the alpine earnings list, having led the way in the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. The record for most prize money during one season, however, continues to be held by Janica Kostelic, who collected CHF 561,646 two seasons ago.
Perhaps surprisingly, World Cup ski jumping overall champion Thomas Morgenstern of Austria led all men with CHF 412,950 won this season. Morgenstern’s teammate, Gregor Schlierenzauer, also reached CHF 335,950, ahead of Finland’s Janne Ahonen, who netted CHF 236,800.
In cross-country, the women’s overall and distance World Cup winner Virpi Kuitunen also defended her victory in the prize money rankings, despite losing the Tour de Ski to Charlotte Kalla in the final kilometer. Her season earnings amounted to CHF 280,250 compared with Kalla’s CHF 207,250. In men’s cross-country, Lukas Bauer netted CHF 312,250 for his eight season podiums along with the victory on the FIS Tour de Ski. Runner-up Rene Sommerfeldt collected a total of CHF 154,750. In nordic combined, World Cup overall winner Ronny Ackermann also topped the prize money rankings with a total of CHF 83,000.
