Keely Kelleher notched a win and a third place, and U.S. Development Team athlete Alice McKennis tied World Cup veteran Chemmy Alcott of Great Britain for a win in South American Cup super G action on Tuesday in La Parva, Chile.
McKennis, a 19-year-old Rowmark Academy grad, and Alcott clocked identical times of 1 minute, 17.84 seconds to top a tightly bunched field. U.S. C Team athlete Kelleher rounded out the top three, clocking 1:18.01. Julia Ford (5th), Erika Ghent (7th) and Kara Shaw (10th) were the other U.S. racers in the top 10.
Kelleher won Tuesday’s second super G at La Parva, which was a makeup South American Cup race originally scheduled for Sept. 1. Kelleher, who finished in 1:15.82, led a sweep of the top three by U.S. racers with Ghent more than a second back in 1:17.02 and McKennis third in 1:17.35. Jennifer VanWagner (6th), Kiley Staples (7th) and Ford (10th) also finished in the top 10.
"Keels ripped one the first race, put herself into a scoring position and gained 12.18 FIS points – it was awesome," said U.S. Europa Cup Head Coach Kraig Sourbeer. "Then we decided to make it a training day for super combined, so after the first race we went and managed three runs of slalom, changed back over to our SG gear and hammered out the second race. It was an action packed day."
Slovenian racers dominated both men’s super G races at La Parva, taking the top four places in the opener and the top three in the second race. World Cup winner Andrej Jerman led the way, taking third in the opener and winning the second. Andrej Sporn finished second in both races. Alek Glebov topped the first race.
NYSEF racer Thomas Biesemeyer was the most consistent U.S. finisher with a 13th place in the opener and a 7th in the second race. Ski Club Vail racer and D Team athlete Will Gregorak posted a pair of top 20s (11th and 18th).
