Recue came in the form of a $50,000 grant from the Canadian federal government, saving the junior international contest scheduled for the April 10-12.
The help comes after organizers spent months scrambling to find a replacement for the eight-year sponsor.
As the only FIS approved international race in North America for 11- to 14-year-old racers, the Whistler Cup is a crucial event for the development of junior athletes. In addition to North American skiers, young men and women come from up to 24 countries to participate.
The funds will go toward housing and feeding the athletes, as well as renting race equipment. Supplemental support is also coming form Whistler-Blackcomb and the Whistler Mountain Ski Club. Area restaurants and hotels will also contribute to the 17-year-old event that has given many of the world’s top racers a venue to hone their skills in their early years.
While the one-time grant saves the day this year, organizers will work hard to retain a new title sponsor before next year’s event.
