Andy Plank, son of racing legend Herbert Plank, covered the Kandahar course in 1:39.18 to nip his teammate Dominik Paris by .12 of a second.

The bronze medal went to Finland’s Andreas Romar, the first ever Finnish medal at World Juniors in downhill.

The North Americans had a good showing, but not as strong as had been hoped for. Training run winning Wiley Maple finished sixth with the only other top 10 coming from Canadian Dustin Cook in ninth.

Canadian Kelby Halbert was 17th, teammate Erik Read 26th and the second U.S. skier was Colby Granstrom in 27th. Tommy Ford was 32nd. Michael Mackie 33rd.

After a weather delay Tuesday when overnight rain pelted the course and created a thick fog, the scheduled has back-logged and organizers were attempting to run both the men’s downhill and super G plus a women’s super G relocated to the GS hill.

“I didn’t expect to beat Dominik Paris today and win the title,” Plank said. “It’s a huge success for me and I’m pretty excited to have a chance to compete in my first World Cup race next week at Are.”

As a gold medal winner, Plank is an automatic qualifier for World Cup finals.

Plank joined his father on the list of World Junior downhill champions, though neither of them realized Dad had won the crown.

“I completely forgot I won that title when I was much younger,” said the senior Plank, Olympic bronze medalist Herbert. “I do remember that I crashed in both technical events after clocking the fastest intermediate times in the second runs, but not that I did so well in the downhill.”

Paris said he was happy with the silver. “Andy just skied a little better than me,” he said. “It’s nice to get a medal. The most important thing is that Italy got the gold.”
