NCAA Championships: Cone and Donaldson take GS, Denver leads teams

Giant slalom races finally got under way in Sunday River today at the 2009 NCAA Championships hosted by Bate College. Bad weather yesterday forced organizers to postpone the first race of the event, pushing it to today.

St. Lawrence University’s Lindsey Cone threw down two sturdy runs for the win ahead of second-place finisher the University of New Mexico’s Estelle Pecherand who clocked the fastest run of the day. The University of Utah’s Alexandra Parker grabbed the final podium spot in third.

David Donaldson of the University of Vermont claimed the men’s victory a half a second ahead of the University of Denver’s  Leif Haugen. Middlebury’s Andrew Wagner was three seconds off the pace to haul in the bronze.

The University of Denver leads the team points race with 330. UVM is only three points back in second, with the University of Utah coming in third with 317.
