Val d’Isere team tutors GAP 2011 organizers
Seven weeks after the 2009 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Val d’Isere, France, organizers of this year’s event traveled this week to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, site of the 2011 World Championships, to impart their leanings.
The debriefing was part of the FIS Knowledge Transfer project, a collaborative effort to share information amongst race organizers to ensure the quality of races continues to advance.
The Val d’Isère 2009 team met with future host, the German Ski Association (DSV), FIS representatives, its broadcasting partner EBU, as well as the organizing committee for the 2013 worlds in Schladming, Austria.
The 2009 team members shared, facts, figures and lessons learned from the event’s election in Miami in 2004 through the conclusion of the races five years later.
Preparations for GAP 2011 were well underway this season as the site hosted World Cup races the weekend prior to Worlds, as well as the Junior World Championships in early March. Garmisch will conclude its test events next year by hosting the 2010 World Cup finals. According mayor Thomas Schmidt, the town experienced a record-breaking tourism year, boosted by interest in the up coming races.
“The experiences from Val d’Isère are enormously important for us even if we will have to adjust to our local circumstances,” said Peter Fischer, co-managing director of the GAP 2011 organizing committee commented. “Having attended Val d’Isère as part of the study group we are in a good position to integrate this information into our own planning.”
“We greatly appreciated the openness of the 2009 organizers to share their lessons learned with us,” said Walter Vogel, co-managing director. “For us it was also important to experience first hand the multi-faceted nature and dimensions of such a big event and to realize the importance of items to new visitors such as signage, spectator flows, ceremonies and many others.”
