Mammoth Spring: Cook scores GS win

Stacey Cook threw it down on her home hill Saturday, winning the FIS Spring Series giant slalom race at Mammoth Mountain.

Cook won by almost a second, finishing with a two-run combined time of 2 minutes, 11.39 seconds. Fellow World Cup racer Megan McJames was next in 2:12.35 and junior racer Julia Ford, 19, rounded out the podium in 2:12.38.

While it’s convenient for Cook to race on the hill where she lives, some of the World Cup contingent are using the Spring Series races as an opportunity to bolster their FIS points for next season.

Cook won a Spring Series GS race at Mammoth last season and was fourth in the national championship GS, though she was recovering from an ankle injury. Giant slalom has not been her strong suit on the World Cup lately, as the last time she earned Cup GS points was with a 28th place at  Spindleruv Mlyn in The Czech Republic in January 2008.

Vail’s Julia Littman, who had a handful of top 10s on the Nor-Am circuit this season, was fourth Saturday (2:12.64) in spite of starting No. 37 while juniors Geordie Lonza (2:13.43) and Jennifer Vanwagner (2:13.59) were fifth and sixth, respectively.

National downhill champion Kaylin Richardson, who won the Spring Series slalom race at Mammoth on Thursday, was seventh (2:13.62).
