Rossignol cuts skier pay

May 05, 2009

Reuters reported today that French ski maker Rossignol will cut the money it pays its professional skiers in half next season. Chairman Bruno Cercley said the move to reduce athlete pay was necessary to keep the company afloat during the economic crisis.

The news comes after an April announcement that Rossignol would be
cutting 400 worldwide jobs (30 percent of its workforce) and reorganizing much of their production, marketing and shipping procedures to cut costs.

“We have asked them [skiers] to accept a 50 percent cut in their fixed salary,” Cercley told French sports daily L’Equipe.

Rossignol currently has contracts with two-time World Cup overall champion Lindsey Vonn, Olympic gold medalist Ted Ligety and World Cup slalom titleholder,  France’s Jean-Baptiste Grange.

“Although they did not jump for joy, they understand. They appreciated the transparency and the explanation,” Cercley was quoted as saying.
