History of Dartmouth book aims to honor rich pedigree

Jun 15, 2009

More than 200 Dartmouth alumni and skiing historians have joined an effort to produce a book and documentary film that promise to honor the school and its skiing programs as one of the sport’s most influential institutions.

Work on the book, which currently dons the working title Passion For Skiing, began about a year ago and is well underway as organizers hope to have a first draft completed by June 20.

Various individuals will produce each of the book’s 15 chapters. “We have assigned most of these chapters to lifelong skiers with personal experience in some aspects of their assigned chapter,” reads a statement on the project’s homepage.  Additional special feature articles will be written to highlight subjects that deserve extra attention.

Project coordinators are calling on anyone with knowledge of Dartmouth skiing history to contribute to the book. “This is probably one of the more unique book projects ever undertaken,” reads the statement. “In many cases, the only way we will know of many aspects of this tale is by someone telling us.  Most of the story is simply not yet written down anywhere.”

The book is being produced to chronicle what its editors call “easily the most significant contribution of any such institution to the greater skiing industry.”

The book will include an introduction by Steve Waterhouse (’65), a Dartmouth Outing Club and its early beginnings chapter by Doug Leitch (’65), and a Ski Mountain Developments chapter by Valerie Jaffee (’78).
