Miller narrowly escapes elimination in Superstars
American ski racing star Bode Miller and his partner, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” designer Paige Hemmis survived the third round of competition last night in ABC’s sports competition reality show “The Superstars,” but not by much.
The show, set at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas, partners professional athletes with Hollywood stars, singers and actors. The remaining teams have survived an exhausting bike/foot race, kayaking an artificial river, a beach relay race and a long jump into the ocean.
In the July 7 episode the teams were first challenged by the “Lagoon Swim,” a 100-yard swim across the resort’s lagoon. Teammates swam one at a time, stopping the clock as the second swimmer crossed the line. Miller joined the nearly all-male first heat finishing third. Hemmis fell behind to give the team a fourth-place finish.
The second event of the day was the “Basketball Shootout.” Each team had one minute to rack up as many baskets as possible. Five baskets of varying lengths presented competitors the chance to increase points with increased distances. Teammates had to alternated being the shooter each time a basket was made.
Miller and Hemmis were the first to shoot it out, opting to stick primarily to the three-point hoop. Miller’s shot was a bit rusty, but his female teammate found her stroke to secure 18 points, which held up for a second-place finish.
With second-place finish after the day’s events, Miller and Hemmis were thrown into the “Rubber Match,” another round of basketball shooting. The duo fell to freeskier Kristi Leskinen and dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy, forcing them into the dreaded obstacle course and possible elimination.
At the obstacle course Miller and Hemmis were pitted against WNBA star Lisa Leslie and actor David Charvet. Miller handily defeated Charvet to give Hemmis a large head start. Leslie gave chase but Hemmis held her off to ensure she and Miller lived to fight in the next episode.
Model Ali Landry and baseball player Jeff Kent were eliminated from competition in a later obstacle course race.
“The Superstars” airs Tuesday nights on ABC at 8pm EST.
