Austrian speed guys turn to biathlon

Jul 09, 2009

Sometimes it’s good to mix things up a little bit. So the Austrian men’s speed team recently took a turn training for another winter sport, biathlon.

Under the guidance of biathlon coach Alfreds Eder and with a demonstration by National Biathlon team member Simon Eder, the downhill group took to roller blades with rifles in tow at the biathlon training site in Hochflizen running four relays.

The competition went to the team of Andreas Buder, Romed Baumann and conditioning coach Reini Ronacher, though it was a close battle between they and the group of Andi Evers, George Steitberger and Mario Scheiber. Both teams registered three misses at the targets.

Coach Florian Winkler, Michael Walchhofer and Klaus Kroell finished a distant third with 10 misses.

Walchhofer called the event “a super alternative,” It rounded out an extensive four-day training program and ended with a nice evening at a mountain hut.

The athletes get a few days at home before heading to the first on-snow camp of the training season.
