FAYSTON, Vt. – GMVS, one of the world’s premier ski academies, announced earlier in the month that Headmaster Dave Gavett will retire from his position at the end of the 2015-2016 academic year but will remain with the school as Headmaster Emeritus and transition advisor until August of 2017.

Gavett joined GMVS in 1978 as a teacher and coach and has worked tirelessly for the past 37 years to propel GMVS to its current competitive standing.

“Dave has been a transformative head of school. He has been the driving force behind the school’s growth and success. His unique combination of high-level race experience, his vision and incredible drive are well known and respected among his peers,” said Jane Goldstein, chair of the Board of Trustees.

Gavett has been directly involved in all aspects of school and campus growth during his tenure, including expanded training facilities at Sugarbush’s Mt. Ellen, with the establishment of the Kelly Brush Race Arena, improved snowmaking and grooming capabilities, the addition of a T-bar, and the renovation of the Poma lift. In addition, GMVS built a LEED certified campus library, and the 30,000 square foot Racing Performance Center, a world-class training and tuning facility. Other projects include recent renovations to the Weiss Academic Building, including a state-of-the-art science center, and the creation of a performing arts theater and auditorium. Gavett’s vision has also helped shape numerous capital campaigns.

“I appreciate the hard work and dedication of the great coaches, teachers, and trustees I’ve worked with over the years, as well as my partners in the broader ski racing community,” said Gavett. “My deepest gratitude goes to the hundreds of students whom I’ve had the privilege to direct [in theater], teach, coach, and advise.”

“I have been thrilled to be part of Dave’s team for many years, first as a parent and recently on the Board, and I will miss him,” Goldstein added. “I know that I speak for the entire GMVS community when I extend my sincerest gratitude and warmest wishes as Dave prepares for the next phase of his life.”

The GMVS Board has appointed a search committee, led by former headmaster and former board member, Jared Cadwell.
