Mark Mitter, the coach from Ramsau, Austria recently bid farewell to Team Shiffrin, leaving behind a legacy of success and gratitude. Despite his modesty, Mitter’s impact as an assistant coach to some of skiing’s brightest stars cannot be overlooked.

For eight years, Mitter collaborated closely with the team of Marcel Hirscher, an Austrian skiing legend with an unparalleled record of eight consecutive men’s overall titles, six slalom titles, and six giant slalom titles. Reflecting on this period, Mitter shares, “Working with Marcel was an incredible experience. We achieved a lot together, and I’m truly grateful for that time.”

In recent years, Mitter has collaborated with Stifel US Ski Team’s Mikaela Shiffrin, the most decorated alpine racer in history. During those two seasons, the program’s efforts resulted in Shiffrin earning the slalom, giant slalom, and overall titles in 2023 and a notable victory at the World Championship GS. Also, despite challenges in the 2024 season due to injury, Shiffrin’s determination, aided by the staff’s contributions, led to her securing the slalom title, highlighting a successful partnership. Also, during those two seasons, Shiffrin, with the support of her staff, won 23 World Cups.

In an interview, Mitter expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with Shiffrin, stating, “It was an amazing time, and we were very, very successful. I’ve learned a lot; hopefully, she also learned a little. Sometimes, it’s just good to do something new.”

When asked about Shiffrin’s standout qualities, Mitter emphasized her determination and perfectionism: “She is always looking for improvement, always self-critical. The best are like this; they have something special.”

Drawing parallels between Hirscher and Shiffrin, Mitter notes their relentless drive for excellence, a trait that sets them apart from others in the sport.

Moreover, Mitter deeply appreciates his collaboration with Eileen Shiffrin, Mikaela’s coach and mother. He acknowledges Eileen’s significant role in shaping Mikaela’s attitudes and approach to skiing, remarking, “Working with Eileen was a privilege. Her guidance and insight have been instrumental in Mikaela’s development as an athlete. Their relationship is truly special, and I’m grateful to have been part of that.”

As he embarks on a new chapter, Mitter reflects fondly on his time with Hirscher and Shiffrin, acknowledging the invaluable experiences and being a part of their successes. His journey with Team Shiffrin may have ended, but his impact on the world of skiing endures.
