The FIS has approved and published the men’s 2023/24 Audi FIS Alpine World Cup calendar.

The most notable piece of the calendar is the to-be-confirmed (TBC) Lake Louise men’s downhill and super-G. These races will possibly occur on November 25th and 26th. The ski racing world knows Alpine Canada Alpin has diligently continued to look for financial solutions to hosting a men’s speed series; the ski racing world hopes for a decision soon and their success. However, it appears Canada is asking for government support. Therefore, we will not likely know the fate of the races until well after the May 27th Alberta Provincial elections.

2023-24 Stifel Alpine World Cups in the US

In the US there will be seven men’s World Cup races. They include two December men’s downhills and a super-G in Beaver Creek, Colorado. In the spring of 2024, the tech skiers will return to Palisades Tahoe for a late February Stifel GS and SL. Also, last year the men’s speed event tour returned to North America for early March races in Aspen; however, this season the March Colorado Stifel races will be giant slalom and slalom. Seeing seven men’s World Cups, three speed and four tech, on US soil will be exciting. The 2023-24 schedule reveals the value the FIS sees in growing the US market.

Gone from the calendar

There is also a noticeable absence of the parallel race in Lech Zürs. There are no World Cup parallels planned for this season.

New World Cup host

The November men’s slalom in Gurgl, Austria, is a notable and welcome addition. This will be the first time the men have had an early-season WC slalom since the Levi races in November 2019 and will be the first time Gurgl will host a World Cup. The races will happen a week after the Zermatt-Cervinia downhills.

Team Combined will debut in Kitzbühel

The team combined race on the 19th of January is an exciting new addition to the sport and the season. The test event at the 2023 St Anton Junior Worlds proved successful. Consequently, the Kitzbühel debut will introduce it to the World Cup. Each team will ski a speed athlete in the downhill and a tech skier in the slalom. The teams will run the slalom in reverse downhill finish order. The fastest downhill skier will see their slalom teammate run 30th.

Regular season speed to finish in Norway

Also, the regular World Cup speed season will once again end in Kvitfjell, Norway, on the 18th of February. This will mean the best 25 speed skiers who don’t also ski tech will have over a month’s break before the Saalbach finals.

Tech skiers busy in the spring

However, the tech skier will have a busy season finale. After Bansko, Bulgaria, they have twelve days before starting in Palisades Tahoe, then a week later, they race SL and GS in Aspen, Colorado. Then a week later, they have tech races in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. Finally, less than a week after, they are racing at the World Cup finals in Saalbach, Austria—a very different program than the speed event athletes.
