What was supposed to be Alice Merryweather’s comeback season, after sitting out in 2020-21 to pursue intensive treatment for an eating disorder, came to an abrupt halt after a downhill training crash on Wednesday resulted in a broken tibia and fibula.

On Saturday, she announced the injury update on her Instagram. Merryweather was going 80 mph near the bottom of the course in Saas-Fee when she crashed, sliding on her face and body across the glacier ice that resulted in multiple facial cuts and a broken tibia and fibula to her left leg. Merryweather was airlifted to a nearby hospital and has already undergone a successful surgery for her broken leg.

“I took a spill training downhill in Saas Fee on Wednesday and have a broken tibia and fibula,” Merryweather shared. “We are still waiting on more clarity around the extent of the damage done to my knee.”

Merryweather will return to the United States in the coming days and seek further evaluation and imaging on her left knee in Vail, Colo.

“The recovery to come looks a lot different than my last,” she commented, “but if I can rewire my brain I think I can heal some bone and ligaments too.”
