Starting Fresh in New Zealand

At just 17 years old, Lara Colturi is already making waves in the world of Alpine skiing. Born in Italy but representing Albania, she is about to begin her third season on the Alpine World Cup circuit. Last year was a breakthrough for her, as she completed her first World Cup season without an injury interruption, finishing 25th in slalom and 22nd in giant slalom. Now, as she prepares for the upcoming season, Lara reflects on her journey, the challenges she’s overcome, and her goals for the future.

Training in New Zealand

“This season started differently than usual,” Colturi says, her voice filled with excitement. “We chose New Zealand for our training, which was a new place for me. Although the snow is scarce, the training is going well. Adapting to less favorable conditions is part of the process, and I’m trying to make the most of the available slopes.”

Her team, including Red Bull, which supported her journey, influenced her decision to train in New Zealand. “New Zealand offered a change from the European glaciers and South American winter locations where I trained before. Here, I can train intensely but sleep at a lower altitude and benefit from not being in fully wintery conditions.”

Overcoming Challenges and Building a Stronger Team

Last year was a test of resilience for Colturi. “Last summer was very different and challenging for me due to the recovery process,” she recalls. Colturi had undergone ACL surgery in February 2023, a significant hurdle in her young career. But her determination never wavered.

“I got back on skis on September 25th, which also happened to be my mother’s birthday. It was a magical moment—a wonderful gift for her. Returning to skiing was an extraordinary experience, and those first days back were truly amazing.”

Colturi’s team, including her mother, Daniela Ceccarelli, a former Olympic gold medalist, and her father, Alessandro Colturi, has also grown. “Two years ago, I felt like the smallest one among the adults, with only my mom and dad with me. But last year, we strengthened our team with a serviceman and an osteopath, who helped me a lot, especially with recovery from injury.”

Handling Pressure and Looking Forward

Despite the challenges, Colturi managed to maintain her focus and deliver strong performances. “The pressure at this level is normal, but I managed to work well with it, thanks to my ‘bubble’ of people around me, the performance center that supports me, Bioteckna, and breathing exercises.”

Looking ahead, Colturi is excited about the upcoming season. “I’m happy to return to America, to Killington, which I enjoyed during the past two seasons. The only new event on the calendar will be the slalom in Gürgl—it’s going to be interesting. And I look forward to Levi, as I’ll turn eighteen during that weekend.”

Future Goals and Aspirations

Colturi’s journey is just beginning, and she is already thinking about the future. “I really like speed, but for now, my mom and dad are holding back a bit because I got injured skiing speed, and it requires a lot more work, both in training and equipment. And besides, there’s time—I’m still young, and as I said, I’d like to stay in this world for a long time.”

With her incredible talent, determination, and team support, Lara Colturi is undoubtedly a rising star in the world of Alpine skiing. As she embarks on another season, the skiing world will watch closely as this young athlete continues to make her mark on the slopes.
