In the latest episode of the Skiing is Believing podcast, Matt and Alan chatted with the sole member of the Romanian Alpine Ski Team, Ania Monica Caill.

She shared the valuable experiences she has encountered and enjoyed and discussed some of the most challenging aspects of such a small team with a lack of financial resources.

Caill grew up near Bordeaux and relocated to the French Alps as a teenager to pursue her ski racing career. At the age of 16, during her inaugural year with the FIS, Ania considered the possibility of changing her nationality to Romania. Given that both of her parents are Romanian, she was eligible to pursue this option. This situation prompted a significant decision for Ania and her mother, ultimately leading to her representation of Romania in skiing.

This decision was taken as the route seemed easier for major championships and, of course, the World Cup tour. Caill reflects on her choice with no regrets, believing that the opportunities she unlocked in Romania would have been unlikely without the influence of a powerful female presence from her French upbringing.

In the interview, Ania also shared some of her goals for the upcoming season. Her continued focus will continue to be on scoring FIS World Cup points for the first time in her career. If she could accomplish that, she would be the first Romanian to score World Cup points for nearly 15 years—a target Ania has set for some point in her career.

She also mentioned an upcoming opportunity in the next few months: the 2025 World Ski Championships in Saalbach. This will mark her fifth participation in the event at the age of 29.

She dedicated most of August to training on the glacier at Saas-Fee, focusing on giant slalom runs as part of her speed work. Her goal is to compete in several World Cup GS events this season, starting with Sölden in a little over three weeks.
