The 20-year-old Austrian rising star Rosina Schneeberger, who qualified for the second run in Levi, Finland, on Saturday after starting with bib 51, suffered a season-ending knee injury in a crash at just her fifth career World Cup start.

Schneeberger, who has never suffered a serious knee injury before, was diagnosed with a torn ACL and lateral meniscus in her left knee by Dr. Peter Gfoeller in Innsbruck on Sunday. An MRI examination confirmed the result, and she was operated on last night in Innsbruck.

The injury occurred when Schneeberger spun around and loaded pressure on her left leg while the knee was bent precariously beneath her before she finally fell to the ground.

“The operation went very well,” reported Dr. Gfoeller. “Rosina will (not ski) for at least six months.”

Schneeberger was removed from the course on the back of a representative from the race organizing committee instead of by sled, and this enabled the event to continue with just a short pause in the schedule. She is Austria’s national super G champion and also claimed two bronze medals, in giant slalom and super G, at last season’s Junior World Championships in Jasna, Slovakia.

“Unfortunately, this is my first serious knee injury. I have already written (my teammates) in America that I will not join them. As far as I know, it goes very well after the surgery and I’m going to fight back to the front,” said Schneeberger.
