Lindsey Vonn’s training run Olympics/GEPA

In an emotional update shared on Instagram from her hotel room, Lindsey Vonn revealed she is officially out of the hospital after undergoing multiple surgeries following a devastating crash at the Olympic Winter Games.

Vonn detailed the severity of her injuries, which included a complex tibia fracture along with fractures to her fibular head and tibial plateau. The trauma was further complicated by compartment syndrome, a serious condition caused by extreme swelling and internal pressure that can cut off blood flow and lead to permanent muscle and nerve damage if not treated immediately.

Swift action proved critical.

Dr. Tom Hackett performed an emergency fasciotomy to relieve the pressure in her leg, a procedure Vonn credits with saving her limb from amputation. She later underwent a six hour reconstructive surgery to rebuild her leg, which she said went amazingly well. In total, Vonn has had multiple procedures as doctors worked to stabilize and repair the extensive damage.

Her hospital stay lasted longer than anticipated due to significant blood loss, leaving her with very low hemoglobin levels and considerable pain. A blood transfusion helped her turn a corner, and she has now transitioned out of the hospital to continue recovery from her hotel.

The road ahead remains long. Vonn shared that she is currently in a wheelchair and largely immobile, as she also suffered a broken right ankle in the crash. She expects to be on crutches for at least two months and has already begun focusing on rehabilitation, determined to take the recovery one step at a time.

While the Olympic outcome was not what she had envisioned, Vonn expressed pride in her teammates and gratitude for the overwhelming support she has received. She described the injury as one blip on the radar in a season that had already exceeded expectations.

Throughout her career, Vonn has been defined not only by victories but by resilience, repeatedly overcoming serious setbacks and returning stronger. This latest chapter is yet another testament to her enduring fight.

From everyone at Ski Racing Media, we are sending strength and hopefully less pain ahead to Lindsey Vonn. ❤️‍🩹
