Swiss team continues to shrink for North American races

Nov 05, 2021

The Swiss team for the upcoming World Cup races in North America continues to shrink after the announcement that Urs Kryenbühl and Ralph Weber will sit out Lake Louise due to Canada’s vaccination requirement. Now, Carlo Janka and Mauro Caviezel are suffering from injuries that impact their ability to compete. Janka has confirmed that he will not be competing in the Lake Louise or Beaver Creek speed races due to severe back pain. Meanwhile, Caviezel may be struggling with the aftermath of a concussion he sustained in January. He is unlikely to make the trip overseas.

“Carlo made great progress in the athletic field last summer, but the condition of his back is clearly inadequate for racing at the moment,” Janka’s trainer, Michi Bont, told Blick.

Janka has only had eight days on snow so far this season, according to the report. He does not experience problems related to his back when speeds are low and turns are smooth, but it becomes difficult for him to control movements when speeds are high and turns are more aggressive. Despite the fact that Janka’s back has been badly injured — to point that retirement could soon be in the cards — the Swiss is working toward racing the Wengen downhills in January.

Caviezel is having trouble with his vision that may be the effect of his concussion in January, according to reports. He states, “It happens [when] I am in a crouched position and from a certain point of view I see double images.”
