Albrecht scheduled to be woken up
According to doctors Swiss skier Daniel Albrecht should be waking up from an induced coma in as little as three days.
The 25-year-old racer was injured during a training run for the Kitzbuehel downhill Jan. 22. Complications with his lung function slowed doctors’ ability to start the wakeup process.
“The fact is that he is really on the good side, they are planning now to go down in medication, which means he will start to wake up, but that will take time,” Swiss doctor Hans Spring told reporters at the World Championships in Val d’Isere, France, today. “The other positive that is really important is that his lung function is more or less okay,” he said.
Albrecht’s brain is functioning well according to a neurological exam that was conducted yesterday. However, doctors will have to wait till after he is awake to further test his memory, reflexes and ability to concentrate.
“It would not be the right prognosis for the moment to say he’s ok, that is not possible, it takes time,” said Spring. “We are really happy today to hear that lung function and cerebral functions appear okay.”
Spring also told reporters that Albrecht’s brain pressure is at a safe level and not posing a threat to cause structural damage.
