ARE, Sweden — Switzerland’s Daniel Albrecht, already with one gold in the super combined at these World Championships, moved into position for a second by storming to the first-run lead in the men’s giant slalom on Wednesday with 44 racers through the finish.
Running 23rd out of the gate, Albrecht edged Canada’s Francois Bourque by 0.07 seconds, clocking 1 minute, 9.44 seconds. Bourque, who crashed in a downhill training run last Friday and suffered a deep bruise on his thigh, had little problems Wednesday in setting the early pace as the second racer out of the gate, clocking 1:09.51.
Albrecht’s teammate, Marc Berthod, who also medaled in the super combi, sits in third at 1:09.54.
Bode Miller, still looking for his first medal at these worlds, remains squarely in the hunt in sixth place, just 0.48 behind Albrecht. U.S. teammate Ted Ligety is currently ninth, Tim Jitloff is in 18th after starting 37th, and Jimmy Cochran is 27th.
Two of the world’s best in giant slalom, Austria’s Benni Raich, and Max Blardone of Italy, both failed to finish their first run.
The second run is scheduled for 1 p.m. local (7 a.m. ET)
