ARE, Sweden — Austria’s Alexandra Meissnitzer said on Thursday she was leaving the alpine World Championships. Meissnitzer said she had decided to go home after finishing out of the top 20 in Thursday’s second training run for Sunday’s downhill, according to eurosport.com.
“I realize other girls have a better chance than me of making the downhill team,” said Meissnitzer, who risked being left out of the Austrian downhill quartet.
Overall World Cup points leader Renate Goetschl and Maria Holaus have already qualified, with Elisabeth Goergl and Nicole Hosp likely to win the last two spots, according to eurosport.com.
“These are my last World Championships and I wanted to bring back a medal, so yes, I’m disappointed, but I’ve still got the medals I won at home,” said Meissnitzer, who finished eighth in Tuesday’s super G won by Swede Anja Paerson.
Meissnitzer, 33, won three medals from previous World Championships, including two golds, as well as three Olympic medals.
