Bad Kleinkirchheim super G to be replaced in Bansko

Feb 02, 2015

The ladies’ World Cup super G race that was canceled in Bad Kleinkirchheim, Austria, on Jan. 11 will be replaced in Bansko, Bulgaria, on Friday, Feb. 27, 2015.

A storm carrying strong winds and blowing snow forced the cancellation of the originally scheduled super G race in Bad Kleinkirchheim after 11 racers had successfully completed the course. Italian Daniela Merighetti was leading the run ahead of her teammate Nadia Fanchini when officials put a stop to the event. American Julia Mancuso was also one of the 11 racers sent down the course before the storm blanketed the hill. She was sitting in fourth position prior to the cancellation.

FIS officials attempted to replace the race in St. Moritz, Switzerland, in January, but race organizers there were unable to take on the expense of hosting an additional day of speed racing.

The women last raced World Cup super G at Bansko in 2012, where Lindsey Vonn bested Tina Weirather by 0.05 seconds and Merighetti finished third. This season, the ladies were already scheduled to race super G and alpine combined at Bansko, so the replacement race will merely kick off the events one day earlier than planned.

The Friday women’s super G in Bansko is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. local time (12:00 p.m. CET).
