WENGEN, Switzerland — In lieu of racing, Bode Miller on Sunday skied the Wengen downhill course as a POV for Universal Sports Network among the group of skiers prior to the forerunners who film the course for broadcast purposes. Typically, these skiers carry hand-held cameras for the shot, but Miller was outfitted with two specially fitted GoPros, one on his boot and another on his chest, for the most natural movement and speed possible under the POV rules. (Helmet cams are not permitted.)
The footage, which is assumed to be first of its kind on the Lauberhorn, benefited the Universal broadcast, but it will also be utilized for future U.S. Ski Team training. Furthermore, the run provided Miller with another much-needed day on skis.
Although Miller did not race in Wengen this week, he certainly made good use of his time, logging two official training runs, a lap as a forerunner in the alpine combined and Sunday’s POV. Miller has not yet solidified any plans for racing this season. He is expected to travel to Kitzbuehel this week and presumably take advantage of training runs on the Hahnenkamm.
“Unfortunately, this isn’t the normal preparation that you go through, but you have to work with what you’ve got. I got healthy in the middle of the season, or I’m not quite healthy all the way yet, but I’m healthy enough to run these courses,” Miller told the media earlier in the week. “I’m trying to keep my head in it, and I think I’m doing OK with that. I just have to be prepared to pull the plug because if I’m not ready, and I’m going to risk severe injury because of one thing or another, I have to be able to make the decision not to race like I did here.”
It’s been well documented that Kitzbuehel, a race Miller has never won, is a motivating force driving his comeback from injury this season; however, his body and personal fitness are dictating the schedule at this point. It’s also been speculated Miller could be using this trip to Europe as training and saving himself for the World Championships on home snow — a race that could be his last.
