Bormio: Miller, Schild in the lead after GS, SL first runs

BORMIO, Italy — After the first run Friday of the men’s giant slalom at the World Cup Finals, U.S. skier Bode Miller is in the lead following a spectacular trip down the Stelvio course, and looking to officially clinch the overall title with a GS victory.
American Ted Ligety, hoping to nail down a GS globe, was in good position in seventh after what he called "a mediocre run," half a second back of Miller and 0.29 behind his main rival, Austria’s Benjamin Raich, who sits in second place.
In the women’s slalom, current slalom points leader Marlies Schild of Austria is in the lead after the first run. Maria Riesch, needing a victory in the slalom to keep alive her hopes of catching current overall leader Lindsey Vonn, is in 11th place and 1.77 seconds back. The two skiers with a chance to catch Schild are close behind, Austria’s Nicole Hosp in third, 0.24 seconds out, and Tanja Poutiainen in sixth, just 0.67 seconds behind.
The women's second run was scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. local time, with the men to follow at 12:30.
