BREAKING: Garmisch Men’s Giant Slalom Cancelled

The men’s World Cup giant slalom in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, has been cancelled. The call was made by race organizers on Sunday morning just after 7:30am local time.

The Garmisch area received upwards of 30cm of snow overnight with 30cm more projected to fall throughout the day Sunday. The overnight snow accumulation combined with the conditions that forced the cancellation of Saturday’s downhill made for no chance to get off a safe, fair race on Sunday despite a dedicated course crew working on the hill for much of the night and early morning.

“Unfortunately, another cancellation today,” said FIS Men’s Race Director, Markus Waldner. “Heavy snowfall, exactly what the weather forecast told us yesterday. The problem is that the snowfall is going to be going on until around noon. We went out at four o’clock in the morning to try and push the snow from the race line but it is not stopping. We would have had to damage the race line with a snow machine. This is Mother Nature. We are an outdoor sport and we have to accept it.”

A replacement race will be announced once that decision has been made.

The men’s Tour now heads to Are, Sweden, for the World Championships February 4-17.
