Burke Mountain Academy’s Danielle Brownell-Patty claimed the women’s super G race Friday as the Whistler Cup opened in Canada. Brownell-Patty led a US effort that nearly met the homestanding Canadian squad with three podium finishes including a silver from Ryan Mooney and bronze from James Lebel in the men’s race.

The Canadians posted five podiums on the day, including skiers in both the K2 and K1 categories (the U.S. only sends K2 skiers)

Brownell-Patty edged the field by .26 of a second for the gold medal among junior skiers 14 and 15 years of age.  Canada’s Roni Remme took silver while Austria’s Marie-Therese Sporer rounded out the podium with bronze. Romark’s Ski Academy’s Breezy Johnson landed a solid result placing inside the top 10 in eighth.

In the men’s race Cayman Island racer Dean Traver’s took home the gold medal, while the USA swept the final two spots on the podium with Green Mountain Valley School’s Mooney earning silver and Sugar Bowl Ski Team Foundation’s Lebel clinching bronze.

Mooney and Lebel led a string of five American men into the top 10 with Carrabassett Valley Academy’s Sam Morse in fifth, Squaw Valley Ski Team’s Cody Wilson in seventh and Aspen Valley Ski Club’s Travis Lundin in ninth.

In the K1-age group events, Canadian skiers finished first and second in the women’s kombi, and second and third in the men’s kombi.

“I had some great help at the start. All my teammates were yelling for me,” said Brownell-Patty, 15, “I wanted to finish without any regrets and I think I did that. It was really fun. It’s an amazing competition.”
