Important information from the USSS: They have named Forest Carey as both Coach of the Year and Alpine Team Coach of the Year. Also recognized is Ski and Snowboard Club Vail’s Ian Dunlop as Sport Development Coach of the Year. 

USSS President and CEO Sophie Goldschmidt shares her thoughts on Carey. And John Hale, Executive Director of Ski and Snowboard Club Vail, and SSCV Alpine Director Brad Wall speak about Dunlop.

U.S. Ski & Snowboard Names Top Coaches For 2021-22

Top club and national coaches have been recognized by U.S. Ski & Snowboard as a part of its annual awards program. Recipients were acknowledged for athletic accomplishments and contributions to the broader success of the sport.

Longtime U.S. Ski Team alpine coach Forest Carey earned Coach of the Year recognition.

In addition, the talented Carey earned the honor of

Alpine Team Coach of the Year

Forest Carey, Park City, Utah
Veteran alpine coach Forest Carey was recognized as Coach of the Year as well as Alpine Coach of the Year. It was the fourth time he has won the alpine honor.

In his 12-year career with the national team, Carey has become known for his passion and caring for his athletes—instilling confidence in them. He is a student of the sport and analyzes every last detail after training and competition from video analysis to split times to equipment performance.

The highlight of the season came at the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, where Ryan Cochran-Siegle took super-G silver. It was an inspiring performance marked by perseverance and fortitude as Cochran-Siegle overcame injuries and hardships with Carey supporting him the entire way.

Goldschmidt Praises Carey

President and CEO of USSS Sophie Goldschmidt shares, “We’re proud to have had the opportunity to work with Forest throughout his years with the U.S. Ski Team and to name him the 2021-22 season U.S. Ski & Snowboard Coach of the Year. He is a talented and dedicated coach who has had a tremendous impact on his athletes, and we look forward to seeing what he does next.”

Alpine Development Coach of the Year

Ian Dunlop, Ski & Snowboard Club Vail, Vail, Colo.
Ian Dunlop, the head U16 men’s coach at Ski & Snowboard Club Vail, was recognized as Alpine Development Coach of the Year. He was recognized not only for the success of his own athletes, but for his overall contribution to development within the region and nationally.

Dunlop began as a ski racer in Wisconsin, before moving to Winter Park, Colo. He later skied for the University of Denver. Dunlop began his coaching career at Winter Park coaching FIS-level athletes before joining U.S. Ski & Snowboard as the Rocky/Central regional coach in 2013, contributing to the growth of excellence in the region. 

In 2019, he took on his current role in Vail making an immediate impact with his U16 athletes posting strong results and moving on to be successful at the FIS level. This past season his U16 men dominated national junior championships with podium finishes across all disciplines, including four of the top five overall. Although top national results get the headlines, Dunlop is known for building an atmosphere where every single athlete on his team feels 100% committed to the team.

Dunlop is a strong contributor to the governance of the sport, serving as vice-chair of the Rocky Mountain Division Alpine Competition Committee and sits on the national U16 and Older Development Working Group.

Executive Director of Ski and Snowboard Club Vail John Hale comments, “I am very proud of our entire SSCV staff. The level of coaching provided to our programs is a direct result of the support we receive from our community. Ian Dunlop is a shining example of professionalism. And not only can you see his excellence in his team’s results, but you also feel it in the culture of his athletes and amongst his staff. He is an exemplary example of what a great coach can contribute.”

SSCV Alpine Director Shows Respect to Dunlop

Brad Wall, Alpine Director with SSCV, states, “Ian deserves the Development Coach of the Year award. We are certainly not surprised. This year at SSCV, we named his entire staff coach of the year. He has been a significant contributor to the success of our U16 men. When I think of Ian, I recognize he is very detail-oriented, a great communicator, and an accomplished planner. His athletes and staff are fortunate to have him.”
