Austrian Carmen Thalmann rose above a field of World Cup skiers hailing from her home nation as well as Germany and Switzerland in this week’s slalom races in Diavolezza, Switzerland. Although she settled for second place on Tuesday, sandwiched between Germany’s Lena Duerr and Barbara Wirth who claimed first and third, respectively, Thalmann rallied on Wednesday to claim a decisive win by nearly a second over her closest rival.

The races in Diavolezza became a popular option for World Cup skiers after the upcoming weekend’s race in Levi, Finland, was cancelled due to warm weather. Thalmann finished the 2014-15 season ranked 12th in the world in slalom, while Duerr was 21st.

Tuesday’s race was tighter as Duerr held a half-second advantage over Thalmann, but the entire podium was within 0.58 seconds of the German winner. On Wednesday, Thalmann gapped Austrian teammate Julia Gruenwald (who finished in the top 15 last year in the Kuehtai World Cup slalom) by 0.92 seconds, while up-and-coming Swiss teen Melanie Meillard grabbed the final podium spot 1.29 seconds off the race leader. Wednesday’s result was impressive for the 17-year-old Meillard who has yet to make her World Cup debut.
