Close Wengen training goes to Cuche

Wengen is a Swiss venue and a charter race of the World Cup, so it was fitting Swiss veteran Didier Cuche should win the first training run Tuesday (Jan. 12). The Swiss posted two of the podium placings and four of the top 10 in the warm-up for a combined on Friday and the classic downhill Saturday as Carlo Janka was third, Didier Defago the winner at Wengen last season, was sixth and Tobias Gruenenfelder was ninth, all within .61 of a second from the winning pace. In addition Liechtenstein’s Marco Buechel, for all practical purposes a member of the Swiss squad, was eighth.

The Italians got two of the top five with Werner Heel in second by less than a tenth of a second and Peter Fill is fifth, just .32 out.

That didn’t leave a lot of room for the other nations to squeeze in, but Georg Streitberger tied for third for Austria, Andrej Sporn tallied seventh in a Slovene uniform, and Aksel Lund Svindal got tenth for Norway.

It wasn’t a bad day for the Americans: Bode Miller, Marco Sullivan and Steven Nyman finished 12-13-14 with Andrew Weibrecht adding 23rd place.

The Canadians, though, were all well back. Erik Guay led the squad in 30th.

Wengen will also host a World Cup slalom Sunday.

About the Author: Hank McKee

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
