Stephanie Lebby of Big Bear Lake, Calif., a student-athlete at the USSA TEAM Academy, claimed the U18 national super G title Monday (March 3) at Copper Mountain by more than a half-second margin over silver medalist Lexi Skovran of GMVS. Taking third was Patricia Mangan, originally from Holimont but now a member of the National Training Group (NTG).

Lebby won the U16 Western Championship SG last season at Alyeska. Skovran stepped up one placing from the bronze she recorded in the downhill March 2, and also improved upon her seventh-place finish in the event last year. Mangan, too, has podium experience, having placed second in SG last season at the U16 Eastern Championships in Sugarloaf, Maine.

Downhill champ Isabella Wright finished fourth, 1.01 seconds behind. Mission Ridge’s Lindsay Ahmann was fifth and Burke Mountain Academy’s Danielle Brownell-Patty sixth.

Put a padlock on the men’s speed titles. Cody Wilson captured his fourth straight on Monday. Having won his second straight downhill title on Sunday, he returned Monday and added his second straight U18 super G crown as well. The Squaw Valley star led an impressive charge from the California ski resort whose athletes collected first, third and sixth on the day. Wilson registered a two-tenths margin over Florian Szwebel, a Ski Club Vail racer out of Winter Park. Wilson’s teammate Jordan Cashman secured third. Canadian Jack Leitch of Banff Alpine Racers was fourth, James “Scotty” Lebel fifth, and Erik Arvidsson sixth. Leitch’s teammate Jeff Read, who stood on the downhill podium just one day earlier, finished seventh.

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
