CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy — Olympic giant slalom champion Julia Mancuso tied for second Sunday in the first run of a World Cup GS with Megan McJames also reaching the second run in 22nd place.
Through 50 skiers, Italy's Karen Putzer led with an unofficial time of 1:22.45 while Mancuso and Swede Anna Ottosson were tied with a time of 1:22.82. McJames, the reigning NorAm giant slalom champion, reached her first World Cup second run (1:24.89).
As temperatures lowered during the night — it was 32 F at race time, they produced an "attack from the back" which saw nine skiers starting from beyond No. 40 crack the top 30. Jessica Kelley was among those bumped, starting 36th and bounced back to No. 31 in the first run, one-hundredth of a second out of a second run.
