Dartmouth Caps Season With NCAA East Regional Win, UVM’s Moltzan Goes Undefeated in Slalom

The EISA circuit took advantage of what snow left at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl this weekend for the NCAA Regionals. Dartmouth won the final competition of the season with 508 points. Middlebury finished in second place with 411 points and the University of Vermont finished in third place with 394 points, which marks the first time this season that the Big Green and the Catamounts haven’t taken the top two spots.

Tanguy Nef won his third slalom of the year with a time of 1:33.59. Sandy Vietze, from UVM placed second, 0.70 seconds back and Erik Arvidsson finished in third place, 1.04 seconds back.

Nef finished on the podium in each carnival slalom that he started this college season.

Paula Moltzan, who has had an impressive and dominating season herself, won the final slalom at Middlebury, going six for six in slalom this year. Moltzan finished with an overall time of 1:35.89, 1.23 seconds ahead of her teammate and second place finisher, Francesca English. Alexa Dlouhy finished in third place, 2.32 seconds back.

“I never set really big goals at the beginning of the season, I just kind of see how it plays out so you never know what can happen, but once I had a role building three [races] in, I thought wow I think I can actually do this and it just came together,” Moltzan said.

Moltzan said that she cannot pin her consistency to a specific aspect of her skiing but being on a team certainly emphasizes it.

“Last year, I got the hang of the college thing, that you do have to finish and I think the biggest thing for me in all of these races is that I’m not skiing at my full potential. You have to train at a different level than you race to make sure you’re consistency finishing,” Moltzan added.

“She’s really found her consistency and that was something we talked about in the spring and this fall, just regulating the governor and knowing how hard she has to go and how many chances she has to take to win and she’s definitely found a groove,” Bill Reichelt, head coach at UVM, said.

Dartmouth’s Brian McLaughlin won his second GS in a row with a combined time of 2:03.05. Max Roeisland, from UVM, took second place, 1.15 seconds behind and Arvidsson took third place again, 1.40 seconds back.

“Obviously, I didn’t put the results together in the college races early in the season but it feels good to bring good skiing back into races and execute pretty well and hopefully I can bring some of that consistency into NCAAs,” McLaughlin said of his later season success.

Middlebury’s Caroline Bartlett won the GS for her best result of the season with a time of 2:06.71. Stephanie Currie from Dartmouth finished in second place, 2.01 seconds back and Foreste Peterson, of Dartmouth, finished in third place 2.03 seconds back.

Bartlett was the only athlete outside of the University of Vermont and Dartmouth to win a race this season.

The Eastern NCAA team will be announced Monday.
