Down Time Episode 9: This is your future

Jan 15, 2008

One grew up in the Midwest, skiing on the weekends mostly at first and doing everything in her power to keep up with her older brothers. The other was born in Montana to parents who were living their lives around skiing.
Kaylin Richardson and T.J. Lanning may come from different backgrounds but they share a passion for ski racing that began with supportive families who relished seeing their children have fun careening down the mountain.
"I pretty much was a boy until I was in seventh grade," says Richardson, who continually chased older brothers Chris and Tom around the Twin Cities of Minnesota, home to the Richardson family. "Everything they were doing I wanted to do," she added. Kaylin's dad, Steve, says his daughter didn't understand that she could ski faster than just about everyone else at first because Kaylin always crossed the finish line and rushed off to join other friends having snowball fights at the base. "She literally won every race her first year but was always amazed when her name was called out at awards. She had no idea," Steve says.
"He absolutely loves the sport," says Lanning's mom, Deb. T.J.'s parents were volunteer ski patrollers in Montana before relocating to Park City, Utah, because of the great skiing. Deb remembers losing T.J. in the trees as a kid, and recalls that he slept with the first new pair of skis he ever owned. For his part, T.J. credits growing up in Park City for helping him rise to the elite level of World Cup racing.
