It was a bitter setback for Austria’s Elisabeth Kappaurer who injured herself last Friday in giant slalom training in Saas Fee, Switzerland. The Vorarlberger native crashed hard and suffered a tibia and fibula fracture in the lower left leg.

The 23-year-old was seen late in the afternoon at the Wallis Hospital in Visp, Switzerland, by Dr. Thomas Beck and was operated on successfully. The procedure, in which an metal rod was inserted to stabilize the bones and thus allowing healing, has been accomplished without complications. Kappaurer will stay in the hospital for a few days before she is allowed to travel home.

“Unfortunately, I fell against the hinge of the gate due to an inside-ski fall,” she explained. “I have survived the operation well and the look is already forward again. I am in good spirits that everything will heal well.”

Kappaurer is the reigning Austrian National GS Champion and finished in the World Cup top 15 four times last season.

“The loss of Elisabeth is very serious,” added Jeurgen Kriechbaum, Sporting Director of the Austrian Ski Federation. “She is a great hope, has a lot of talent in the giant slalom and showed with her previous training performance her strength.”
