Feasey claims back-to-back GS wins at Coronet Peak

QUEENSTOWN, New Zealand – Newly crowned national giant slalom champion Willis Feasey backed up Sunday’s result with another good day at the office, winning the men’s giant slalom Coronet Cup held at Queenstown’s Coronet Peak on Monday.

“I have a bit of confidence now and it’s really helping my skiing,” Feasey said after the race. “It’s also a good sign that I have the consistency in the races that I have had.”

Feasey’s combined time of 1:38.93 over two runs put him ahead of Slovakia’s Andreas Zampa in second at 1:39.83 and Nick Prebble in third at 1:40.53. Feasey led the field after the first run; although happy with his position, he was confident that he could increase his lead on the second run.

His GS results over the past two days, including a win in the national championships yesterday, have seen Feasey improve his world ranking from 190 to 105.

World Cup superstar Lindsey Vonn made a guest appearance as a forerunner during the national championship GS races, as the U.S. Ski Team was already training in the area.

Switzerland’s Carole Bissig took the win in the women’s GS with a time of 1:43.62, as New Zealand’s Piera Hudson was hot on her heels at 1:43.90s for second and Georgia Willinger third at 1:45.52.

Racing continues at Coronet Peak on Tuesday with the national slalom championships. Hudson is the defending women’s champion (who also claimed the women’s GS title this year), and Adam Barwood is the defending men’s champion.
