FIS vetoes Ghedina's one-race comeback stint
Italian downhiller Kristian Ghedina’s attempt to come out of retirement for one race has been blocked.
VAL GARDENA, Italy — Italian downhiller Kristian Ghedina’s attempt to come out of retirement for one race has been blocked.
Ghedina was planning to take part in Saturday’s World Cup downhill on the Saslong course, but the International Ski Federation said the injury risk would be too great and it would set a bad precedent.
The 37-year-old Ghedina was planning to use the same equipment from his downhill debut on the Saslong course 17 years earlier.
Instead, Ghedina acted as a forerunner in Wednesday’s training session. Forerunners are usually used to check the course conditions, but Ghedina’s run was mostly ceremonial. He also plans to act as a forerunner for Saturday’s race.
Ghedina retired at the end of last season. His four victories in Val Gardena tie him for the record with Austrian great Franz Klammer.
