INVERMERE, B.C. — Defending NorAm super G champion Erik Fisher led a U.S. podium sweep Thursday in the second super G of the season, with Andrew Weibrecht in second place and Jeremy Transue third. U.S. skiers filled eight of the top 10 places.
Fisher, second Wednesday in the opener won by Weibrecht, was timed in 1 minute 14.98 seconds, with Weibrecht second in 1:15.12 and Transue third with a 1:15.25 clocking. That gave Weibrecht, who won the super G and super combined, and Fisher three top-3 NorAm results in less than 24 hours at Panorama Ski Resort. U.S. skiers filled eight of nine possible podium spots in the two days.
"It was a pretty good little week … well, yeah, two days," Fisher said. "Now he [Weibrecht] and I are tied for the super G lead, both with a first and a second. That's pretty cool."
Fisher leaves after the new year, though, to race on the World Cup; as NorAm champion, he has guaranteed start rights in World Cup super G races this winter.
"It was perfect, nice and clear although the sun doesn't get to that side of the mountain [where the race course is], so the light was a little flat. But the snow conditions didn't change very much from [Wednesday] — still soft, but they were fine … that was the plan — come in here, try to win one and get some confidence going again," Fisher said, "and then buzz over to Europe and try to keep rolling…"
The next men's NorAm races are two giant slaloms and two slaloms Jan. 2-5 as part of the Chevrolet Super Series at Sunday River, Maine.
