Flower Power: Eye-opening time in Chile

Oct 23, 2007

I’m now back in school at Rowmark Academy in Salt Lake City, just back from my first Chilean ski experience in Valle Nevado a few weeks ago. It was short — only about nine days on snow — but a valuable experience. It was nice to have a change from the summer snow at Mount Hood and get on some winter crystals.
I'M NOW BACK
in school at Rowmark Academy in Salt Lake City, just back from my first Chilean ski experience in Valle Nevado a few weeks ago. It was short — only about nine days on snow — but a valuable experience. It was nice to have a change from the summer snow at Mount Hood and get on some winter crystals.
On top of GREAT skiing, I also have great coaches I can thank for making me push myself to my potential. It was a tough camp, but whenever I would get tired and make technical mistakes, I could always rely on my coach, Craig, to tell me to keep my head. While I’m thanking coaches, I have to thank Everett, my equipment manager, for dialing in my Atomics and other equipment needs so I could focus on my skiing rather than the business side that sometimes comes with ski racing.
As fun as the skiing was, I was even able to have some fun on my down time and submerge myself in the Chilean culture. On one of our days off, we went to a fish market in Santiago, where I ate some interesting food, to say the least. The food was great, but I’m not sure I will try any of it again … even if I have the chance. The camp finished off strongly with good skiing and lots of sunshine.
I was excited to be back home so I could start playing soccer again with my high school team and to see that the first snow had already fallen. Despite being in winter for two weeks, there is just something about the first snow that gets everybody excited to go skiing again!      The soccer season has been great — our team won the state championship in an intense double overtime, one shootout and sudden-death shooting.
Every day seems like a holiday when I get home from school to find more boxes of equipment on my front step. Whether it be new SRD cloths, Keka guards, Booster straps or Carrera gear, each box gets me more and more excited to go get the season started.
So I hope to see you all sometime this winter, but until then, ski fast.
