Colby GranstromThe World Junior Ski Championships got underway in the Mont Blanc region of France with the men running GS at Les Houches and the women super G in Megeve.

French skiers won both races and a couple of the youngest guys in the field upset better established racers in the GS. Barely 18, Mathie Faivre got the men’s win with a healthy three-quarter of a second win over German Stefan Luitz, himself 18 and starting 41st in the field of the world’s best youngsters. Epsen Lysdahl of Norway got bronze.

The women’s super G race went to Marine Gauthier, the defending World Junior downhill gold medalist. She topped teammate Jeromine Geroudet by eight hundredths for her second title. The bronze medal went to Austrian Michelle Morik.

The men’s race was the better one for the U.S. team. Will Gregoriak posted sixth and Colby Granstrom was 11th.  Michael Ankeny was 39th, Wiley Maple 40th and Nick Daniels 66th. Keiffer Christianson did not finish the first run.

Gregorak credited Granstrom with a good course report for making his result as good as it was.

“I had a super solid first run without any major mistakes and I had a really good course report from Colby for the second run, but then lost the podium on the bottom,” said Gregorak, “Colby said there were three gates you need to be smart on and he was right. I just didn’t pin the bottom like I needed to, but it was a good start to the week for sure.”

“The conditions couldn’t have been better today,” said Granstrom, “You could go full pin the entire way down. Like I told Will, those three gates were tricky, but if you knew they were coming, it was no problem. I’m just going to have to keep attacking throughout the week and hopefully end up on the podium.”

Philip Brown led the Canadian men in 14th with Trevor Philip in 29th, Andy Trow 32nd, Kelby Halbert 42nd and Sasha Zaitsoff 44th. Erik Read did not finish the second run.

Best North American news in the women’s race was Canadian Stephanie Irwin in 10th place.

“steph skied really well,” said Canada’s team leader Benoit Lalande. “She was the second skier down and was hanging around the top five before ending up tenth, Lalande said. “It’s a great result.”

The other Canadian fiinisher was Catherine Morel in 39th. Victoria Stevens was disqualified and Julia Roth and Madison Irwin failed to finish.

The women’s squad also ran into some difficulty with half the U.S. contingent failing to complete the course. Julia Ford led the way for the U.S. in 38th place. Abigail Fucigna was 43rd. Greta Byrne, Vanessa Berther and Devin Delany failed to finish  and Brooke Wales didn’t start.
