Breaking down ski racing to grow the sport—and support athletes chasing the Europa Cup
World Cup broadcasts capture the spotlight moments of ski racing. But below that level lies a different reality—long drives across Europe, tight margins for FIS points, and the constant grind toward Europa Cup qualification.
That’s the world British filmmaker and former racer Elsa Powell documents on her YouTube channel Fall Liners, and it was the focus of her recent appearance on the Fresh Corduroy podcast.
Powell launched Fall Liners in 2024 with a clear purpose: show the real journey of British athletes chasing Europa Cup starts and beyond—and explain the sport in a way new fans can understand.
“You could make a series where I don’t explain anything,” Powell said. “But if you start talking about minimums or FIS points without context, someone who’s never skied has no idea what that means.”
Instead, she deliberately breaks down the technical language of the sport, points lists, continental cup points, inspection, gate combinations, so even non-skiers can follow the stakes. That educational approach has become a defining feature of the channel.
Her goal extends beyond storytelling. Powell believes broader understanding leads to broader interest, and that interest can translate into sponsorship and funding for athletes like Molly Butler and Zak Carrick-Smith, both featured prominently on the channel.
On Fresh Corduroy, Powell discussed the tension between filmmaker and teammate, capturing both the highs and the vulnerable lows of competition. Rather than focusing solely on podiums, Fall Liners highlights the incremental progress that defines athlete development at the Europa Cup level—where a top-60 finish can matter just as much as a medal elsewhere.
For fans interested in the layers beneath the broadcast surface, Powell’s work offers insight into what it takes to climb the ladder in international ski racing.
Fall Liners is available on YouTube, with new episodes following the ongoing European season.
